Polished Brass…

The Devon Hotel New Plymouth Brass, under the leadership of Music Director Leigh Martin , is rehearsing intensively in preparation for the National Brass Band Championships which are to be held in Blenheim 11 to 15 July.

The Band will perform the contest music in a concert to be held in St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Liardet Street New Plymouth at 3pm on Sunday 1 July.

The 2018 test piece chosen by the national association is a work specifically commissioned for this contest. BBANZ commissioned young New Zealand composer, Todd Smith, to write a test piece for New Zealand’s B grade bands.

The work, “OUROBOROS” based on an ancient Greek symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, or representing a perpetual cycle of life and death leading to rebirth. The music uses literal symbolism to create a piece of cycles. More specifically, a simple rhythm introduced at the start that expand and adapts over the duration of the music.

For the hymn or reflective piece Leigh has chosen a 21st century arrangement, of the old favourite, “The Old Rugged Cross.” This wonderful arrangement allows the Band to produce a range of glorious sounds.

Of great interest is the fact that at this concert the Band will give a preview performance of a brass band test piece, written by New Plymouth’s own Fraser Bremner, which will be premiered at the contest. The music has a strong New Zealand connection.

The concert will also feature some members of the band that are competing in various events.
